Women Lead the New Bible Movement With Mobile-Friendly Scripture

The fastest-growing Bible-reading community on the Internet already boasts around three million active users and half a million Twitter followers from 220 countries around the globe — and they’re nearly all women.

She Reads Truth is an online website and social (media) movement that aims to encourage more women to engage with Scripture on a daily basis. Two of its co-founders, Raechel Myers and Amanda Bible Williams, began the site four years ago out of a desire to make passages of Scripture more accessible and shareable for readers of the digital age.

“Bible reading can become stale, not because the words within the Bible are stale, but because we do not engage all the senses God gave us,” said Lore Ferguson Wilbert, a regular contributor to the site, which features devotional commentaries and Instagram-worthy quotes and pictures. “Often times we are so pedantic and formulaic about it that we lose the beauty of it. I love that the team behind [She Reads Truth] is interested in making the actual act of reading Scripture beautiful.”

Bringing graphic design to the Bible certainly has its advantages, especially as more Christians want to take their dose of faith on the go. Studies suggest that 62% of companies that design mobile-friendly websites will experience increased sales; so too might mobile-friendly Bible passages lead to more discussions and interest in exploring faith.

The site frequently reminds readers, however, that social media is no replacement for actual Bible study or congregation meetings.

“Too often I see Christians using technological engagement as a replacement for church. That’s a huge issue in our time and something [She Reads Truth] regularly warns its readership about,” said Pastor Nate Shurden, who provides some theological oversight for the site. “No website or app can replace the living, breathing, real-person community of the church.”
