Miracle Baby Born After Motorcycle Crash Leaves Parents With Multiple Injuries

The emergency birth of Arabella Marie was nothing short of a miracle. The newborn was delivered on June 18, shortly after a motorcycle crash involving her then-pregnant mother.

The Herald Bulletin reports that Kayla Carter, 21, fractured her hips and pelvis when the motorcycle she was on collided with a truck. The motorcycle was driven by Arabella’s father, David Giselbach, 25. Floyd Craver III, 51, was the driver of the truck and was later charged with operating while intoxicated.

Arabella was delivered one month early via cesarean section shortly after the crash. Even with her mother’s injuries and being delivered one month early, the newborn has a clean bill of health.

Considering that 110 million people visit emergency rooms each year, often with life-threatening injuries, the odds of the infant’s survival were slim.

“I am really overjoyed,” said Kathy Giselbach, Arabella’s grandmother. “It’s amazing when you think about how it could have gone, it takes your breath away.”

Arabella may be in the clear, but her parents are not. Both suffered from multiple broken bones and will need time to heal from their injuries.

Jumping from 88,000 in 2013 and 92,000 in 2014, motorcycle injuries have increased 4.5% in just one year. The Insurance Information Institute states that in 2014, about 8.4 million motorcycles were on the road, and 4,586 people died from fatal crashes involving such vehicles.

To help raise money for the couple’s medical bills, Remington Riccardi, a family friend, started a GoFundMe page. Along with Riccardi’s efforts, Anderson firefighter Skip Ockomon is encouraging people to help the Giselbach family.

Kathy Giselbach is well known in the community for her work with several charities and the local Anderson Fire Department.

“(Kathy Giselbach) has helped lots of people in Madison Country. She and her son, and her daughter-in-law, are always volunteering,” he said. “(Kathy) doesn’t want recognition, but they’re going to get it.”
